Pediatric Vascular Anomalies Care
Helping New Jersey Families Navigate Vascular Birthmarks and Malformations with Confidence
Vascular anomalies, including birthmarks, hemangiomas, and other rare conditions, can be complex to diagnose and treat. Families often work with different specialists along the way, but finding a unified plan of care can still be challenging. At Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health, we bring together two highly experienced teams in New Jersey to provide thoughtful, coordinated care tailored to your child’s needs:
- The Megan Schulman Vascular Anomalies Clinic at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital: The only specialized vascular anomalies program in Monmouth County, created with a generous donation from the Megan Schulman Memorial Foundation.
- The Vascular Birthmark Center at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital, a multidisciplinary program that has provided pediatric care in vascular anomalies for over 20 years.
Our goal is to simplify the path forward. With specialized clinics at both our children's hospitals in Monmouth and Bergen Counties, families across New Jersey have access to leading vascular anomaly care close to home.
Conditions We Treat
Vascular anomalies involve abnormal development of blood vessels or the lymphatic system. These conditions may be present at birth or appear later and can affect nearly any part of the body. Some of the most common conditions we treat include:
- Infantile hemangiomas: Often called “strawberry birthmarks,” these vascular growths can grow quickly and may need treatment to reduce size or prevent complications.
- Port-wine stains and capillary malformations: These flat red or purple birthmarks often benefit from early laser treatment.
- Venous and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs): Irregular blood vessel connections that can interfere with circulation and may require medication or surgery.
- Lymphatic malformations: These can cause swelling and discomfort due to fluid buildup in the lymphatic system.
- Mixed malformations and rare vascular tumors: Including conditions such as spider angiomas, tufted angiomas, and Kaposiform hemangioendotheliomas.
- Prenatal or congenital vascular anomalies: When a condition is diagnosed before or at birth, early intervention can make a significant difference.
