What to Expect When Your Child Needs an Imaging Test
Your child’s doctor may recommend an imaging test to better understand what’s going on inside your child’s body. Once you receive a prescription (also known as a test order), you’ll schedule an appointment at one of our pediatric imaging locations.
You can bring the paper prescription with you or ask your provider to send it directly to us. At your appointment, our team will ensure your child’s imaging test is done safely and comfortably using low-dose radiation protocols and kid-focused care techniques.
Your child’s imaging team may include:
- Pediatric Radiologists who review and interpret imaging results.
- Technologists who gently guide your child through the scan process.

What should I bring to my child's imaging appointment?
Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your child’s scheduled appointment time. You should bring:- Your child’s insurance card
- A valid photo ID
- The imaging order if it was given to you on paper
- A comfort item for your child, such as a favorite toy or blanket
Will my child need to fast or follow any prep instructions?
Some imaging tests may require fasting or specific instructions. You’ll receive clear preparation guidelines when you schedule the appointment.
What can I do to help my child prepare for an imaging test?
It’s normal for you and your child to feel anxious about an imaging appointment. Here are a few tips that can help you and your child have a positive experience:- Talk it through. Help your child understand what to expect in a calm, age-appropriate way.
- Bring comfort items. A book, stuffed animal, or toy can be soothing during the test.
- Time it right. Schedule during your child’s best time of day, when they’re well-rested and not hungry.
- Ask about sedation. If your child is anxious or needs a longer scan, talk to your provider about whether sedation is appropriate.
