Pulmonary & Critical Care Fellowship Program Pulmonary | Hackensack University Medical Center
The faculty at Hackensack Meridian Health are extremely proud of the growth of Pulmonary at Hackensack University Medical Center which was illustrated by our rise to #22 nationally for Pulmonary and Lung Surgery in the most recent release from U.S. News & World Report.
Our fellows receive a robust experience in both their inpatient pulmonary and procedure rotations as well as their outpatient experience.
The academic practice has grown substantially over the past 3 years with the additions of Dr. Aditi Mathur, Dr. Sean McKay, Dr. Victoria Mock, Dr. Lesley Philip and Dr. Sung Hong.
Dr. Mathur is the director of Interstitial Lung Disease and has brought her wealth of knowledge and experience from her prior training at Yale and Mount Sinai to Hackensack.
Dr. McKay is a distinguished, board-certified Interventional Pulmonologist with over a decade of clinical experience at The Murtha Cancer Center at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Dr. McKay specializes in the diagnosis and management of lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies, airway obstruction, and complex pleural disease.
Dr. Mock is the director of Airway Disease and joins us after years in practice at Mount Sinai. She specializes in the treatment of chronic airway diseases, such as severe asthma and advanced COPD.
Inpatient Rotation
- The inpatient service is a busy rotation with a mix of both common and rare/unusual conditions that many other programs do not get to see. As a referral center for the network and northern New Jersey and with the abundant patients from the John Theurer Cancer Center, fellows have the opportunity to learn from a large variety of patients.
- Fellows run the service with a dedicated teaching attending.
- To help offload the service and optimize the learning experience, the division has created a non-teaching service with a separate attending
Outpatient Rotation
- Fellows spend a full week in the outpatient clinic every 4 weeks.
- During their week, they will see their Continuity Clinic patients and spend time in sub-speciality clinics including:
- ILD clinic with Dr. Aditi Mathur and Nodule clinic with Dr. McKay
- Thoracic Surgery clinic with the Thoracic Surgery team including Dr. Daniel Mansour, Dr. Nabil Rizk, Dr. Geoffrey Pelz and Dr. Michael Spallone.
- Sleep clinic with Dr. John Villa.
- Fellows will also see patients who have recently been discharged from the hospital with pulmonary issues to help reduce readmissions and have dedicated time to return messages and call patients for their outpatient firm.
Our 4+1 system allows our fellows to receive more ambulatory experience than most other programs in the country and is an example of how our program is dedicated to giving our trainees the best experience possible. Feedback from the fellows have been fantastic and we feel this has given our fellows the most accurate exposure to what being an outpatient pulmonologist is like.
