Welcome to the Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Hackensack University Medical Center.
Thank you for your interest in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) fellowship at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC). We are proud to offer a comprehensive training program at the academic flagship of the 18-hospital Hackensack Meridian Health network.
HUMC is an 803-bed nonprofit teaching and research hospital recognized as the #1 hospital in New Jersey, with our Pulmonary and Lung Surgery program ranked #22 in the nation (U.S. News & World Report, 2024). You will train in a dynamic tertiary care center serving a large and diverse patient population.
Our program is built on a strong academic foundation, with deep ties to the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, multiple residency programs, and subspecialty fellowships. While our independent fellowship began in 2022, we have a long history of training PCCM fellows and have recruited top-tier faculty with a profound commitment to education and mentorship.
Dynamic Critical Care Training
Our mission is to prepare fellows to lead in any critical care setting. Highlights include:
- Advanced Airway Management: A dedicated course prepares you for our extensive hands-on airway experience.
- State-of-the-Art Simulation: A comprehensive curriculum in our simulation lab focuses on leading codes, rapid response teams, and managing complex clinical scenarios.
- Advanced Ultrasound & Echocardiography: An immersive course followed by continuous, hands-on feedback on image acquisition and interpretation. This training provides a direct pathway for fellows to pursue certification in advanced critical care echocardiography.
- ECMO Expertise: Gain invaluable experience managing complex respiratory failure as all vvECMO cases are managed directly by our team in the Medical ICU.
Robust Pulmonary Experience
The pulmonary experience is equally robust, ensuring you become a well-rounded clinician.
- Diverse Continuity Clinic: Our 4+1 schedule provides a dedicated ambulatory block to focus on your outpatient panel, which includes everything from common respiratory diseases to rare and complex pathologies.
- Subspecialty Exposure: Dedicated rotations and clinics include Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), Sleep Medicine, Thoracic Surgery, ALS, and Interventional Pulmonology.
- Procedural training: You will build a strong foundation in bronchoscopy and pleural disease management before advancing to EBUS, robotic bronchoscopy, and other advanced procedures.
- Complex Oncologic Care: With the on-site John Theurer Cancer Center, a world-renowned institution, you will gain unique expertise in managing complex lung cancers and the respiratory complications of novel cancer therapies.

Program Overview
Our Campus
Located in Bergen County, Hackensack University Medical Center is located just a short distance from New York City. Here, you will complete all of your core clinical rotations (except for lung transplantation).
Our critical care team manages a 20 bed medical ICU and a 26 bed step down unit as well as an active critical care consult service. The new, nine-story Helena Theurer Pavilion houses our specialty ICUs (SICU, NeuroICU, CTICU), state of the art operating rooms and additional step-down units. As a level 1 trauma center, our fellows will have the opportunity to respond to trauma calls and perform shifts with the air medical team, responding to emergencies throughout the region.
The pulmonary continuity clinic is based in our modern medical arts pavilion (20 Prospect) adjacent to the hospital. Just a few floors down sits our advanced pulmonary rehabilitation center. Located within the hospital, is the well equipped pulmonary function and exercise physiology lab. For procedural training, you will work in our new Combined Procedure Unit (CPU), which features dedicated pulmonary procedure rooms with anesthesia support.
Program Mission
It is the mission of the Hackensack University Medical Center Pulmonary Critical Care Fellowship Program to educate physicians to have a compassionate, cognitive, scholarly, relationship-oriented approach to the care of patients. The fellows and faculty are committed to expanding the knowledge and practice of the discipline of Pulmonology and Critical Care. Furthermore they are committed to bringing that innovative understanding to the bedside in a humanistic manner. The fellowship creates an environment that fosters life-long learning and innovation in the service of patients.Program Aim
At the completion of your fellowship training, fellows should:
- Possess the medical knowledge and clinical skills to independently provide competent care to patients with medical conditions commonly encountered by pulmonologists in outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Possess the medical knowledge and clinical skills to independently provide competent care to patients in the critical care setting.
- Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in patient care that includes advocating for their patients’ needs, helping their patients navigate through the health care system and coordinating their patients care among multiple disciplines.
Program Overview
Welcome to the Infectious Disease Fellowship at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, New Jersey. Hackensack University Medical Center is a 775 bed state-of-the-art hospital that serves as a tertiary referral center for a 13 hospital network, close to New York City. The medical center is home to one of the largest stem cell transplant programs and cancer centers in the country, and also hosts a growing renal transplant program. HUMC has been nationally ranked in many disciplines. In addition, the hospital is the primary teaching site of the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, a new medical school with an innovative curriculum. Trainees in our infectious disease fellowship program will benefit from individualized attention from a dedicated faculty and will have exposure to and learn from diverse patient populations. They have the opportunity to teach residents and students and to interact with trainees in other disciplines such as critical care and pharmacy, as well as engage in scholarly activity, all in a close-knit environment.

Our program’s mission is to educate physicians to provide a compassionate scholarly approach to the care of patients, while expanding the larger knowledge and practice of the discipline of infectious disease and bringing that innovative understanding to the bedside in a humanistic manner. The fellowship creates an environment that fosters life-long learning and innovation in the service of patients today and tomorrow. Furthermore, the infectious disease fellowship is a part of a community of practice where fellows and faculty support each other, as they meet the challenge and embrace the privilege of providing such care.
Program Aim
The aim of the Hackensack University Medical Center Infectious Disease Fellowship Program is to train fellows as infectious disease physicians who are fully competent to independently practice infectious disease in both ambulatory and inpatient settings, while fostering an appreciation for lifelong, self-directed learning.
Providing Residents with an Interdisciplinary Approach
We offer a four-year ACGME accredited postgraduate residency training program based at the Donna M. Sanzari Women’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center. Our Medical Center campus houses not only the Women’s Hospital, but also the Children’s Hospital, John Theurer Cancer Center, Research Center and more. We have a state of the art Labor & Delivery unit and adjacent Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Our Women’s Hospital also houses the Antepartum Unit, Perinatal Diagnostic Unit, Perinatal Assessment and Triage Area, Postpartum Unit, and Gynecology Unit.
The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Hackensack University Medical Center is comprised of the Clinical Divisions of Obstetrics, Gynecology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility, Gynecologic Oncology, Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery, and Family Planning. We also have our own Research Division. In addition to an active full-time clinical faculty, there over 80 community-based physician members who have admitting privileges and who are closely integrated into the department. Community and faculty physicians attend teaching rounds and conferences and enjoy a relationship centered on their shared responsibility for resident education and training.
