When to Seek Help: Recognizing Emotional or Behavioral Changes

Every child experiences challenges as they grow. Some are mild and manageable, while others may require more structured support. Identifying concerns early can make a big difference in helping your child feel better and succeed at home, in school and with friends.

Everyday Challenges

These are common concerns that can disrupt daily life but are often manageable with guidance and therapy:

  • Parent-child conflict
  • Trouble making or keeping friendships
  • Difficulty following directions
  • Stress or adjustment issues
Moderate Concerns That May Require Therapy

When emotions or behaviors start interfering with your child’s quality of life, therapy can help:

  • Anxiety: Frequent worry or fear that disrupts daily routines
  • Depression: Ongoing sadness or loss of interest in usual activities
  • Behavioral issues: Defiance, aggression, or acting out
  • Impulse control issues: Trouble managing urges or behaviors
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): Intrusive thoughts or repetitive actions that disrupt daily routines
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): Difficulty focusing, sitting still or controlling impulses
Complex Mental Health Needs

Some children need more intensive care to stay safe and feel well:

  • Eating disorders: Challenges with eating, body image and emotional well-being, often requiring multidisciplinary care
  • Panic attacks: Sudden episodes of intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms like a racing heart or difficulty breathing
  • Hallucinations (hearing voices): Sensory experiences that are not based on reality
  • Bipolar disorder: Conditions that cause extreme mood swings or unpredictable behavior
  • PTSD (Post-traumatic stress): Emotional and physical responses to a traumatic event
  • Suicidal thoughts or self-harm: Expressions of hopelessness or self-harm, requiring immediate intervention

If you’re concerned, trust your instincts. Our team is here to help guide you and your child toward healing.

Behavioral Health Services Designed for Every Level of Care

Our Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) offer focused, structured therapy for children and adolescents who need more support than traditional outpatient care can provide. IOP bridges the gap between inpatient and outpatient care, helping children with severe conditions stabilize and build coping skills while remaining at home.

What we offer:

  • Access to IOP at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
  • Individual and group therapy tailored to challenges like ADHD, anxiety, depression and PTSD
  • Family counseling to improve communication and strengthen relationships
  • Transportation for local families to ease access to care

For children managing less severe symptoms or transitioning from more intensive care, our outpatient programs offer personalized, flexible support.

Services include:

  • One-on-one therapy for anxiety, OCD, stress and more
  • Medication management and psychiatric evaluations
  • Group therapy that supports social skills and peer relationships

Inpatient care is critical for addressing severe symptoms quickly, ensuring safety and creating a personalized treatment plan. When your child is experiencing a behavioral health crisis, our inpatient care provides immediate, round-the-clock support in a safe and therapeutic environment.

What we offer:

  • Acute hospitalization for children and adolescents in partnership with Carrier Clinic.
  • Psychiatric evaluations and stabilization for conditions such as severe depression, suicidal thoughts and hallucinations.
  • Integrated care addressing both medical and mental health needs for hospitalized children.

Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health offers a comprehensive suite of specialized programs tailored to meet the unique mental health needs of children, teens and families. From early intervention to urgent care, we provide innovative, compassionate support at every level.

The New Jersey Pediatric Psychiatry Collaborative (NJPPC) is a grant-funded program that partners with pediatricians across New Jersey to help them screen, diagnose and manage mild to moderate mental health conditions directly in their offices. It involves:

  • Collaboration with experts: Pediatricians work with psychiatrists at statewide hubs, including those at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, to enhance care for conditions like anxiety, ADHD and depression.
  • A bridging clinic: The PPC ensures continuity of care with a bridging clinic that transitions children to outpatient services, often within a week.
  • Comprehensive access: This program is open to all children, improving access to mental health care statewide.

In order for your child to receive services through the NJPPC, their pediatrician needs to be a registered member of the NJPPC. You may direct your child’s pediatrician to this link so they can learn more about the NJPPC and how to register with the program.
