How Weight Loss Surgery Works

Weight loss surgery works by changing your stomach and digestive system so you:

  • Absorb fewer calories and nutrients
  • Eat smaller portions of food and become satisfied more quickly

When combined with healthy lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise, minimally invasive bariatric surgery will help you lose weight. The procedure is only part of your journey to a healthier, happier version of yourself.

Is Weight Loss Surgery Right for You?

You may be a candidate for weight loss surgery if you have been unable to lose weight through diet, exercise or weight loss medications and have a medical condition caused by obesity. Weight loss surgery can help address weight-related health conditions, including:

  • Fatty Liver Disease
  • Heart disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Type 2 Diabetes

If you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, weight loss surgery may be right for you.

  • Do you have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher?
  • Do you have a BMI of 35 or higher, plus a serious weight-related health condition?
  • Does your weight limit your ability to participate in activities?

Minimally Invasive Weight Loss Surgery Options

Our bariatric surgeons use the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotic bariatric surgery, whenever possible. Minimally invasive bariatric surgery results in less scarring, shorter hospital stays and better outcomes. Procedures we offer include:

This surgery combines a sleeve gastrectomy with a bypass of a small part of the small intestine.
During this procedure, the surgeon creates a small pouch within the stomach and connects it to the small intestine. The remainder of the stomach is left in place. Everything you eat will enter the small pouch and bypass most of the stomach and the first section of the small intestine. Less food is absorbed into the body through this route.
Also known as gastric band surgery, lap-band surgery is performed by placing a band around the top part of the stomach to create a smaller section of stomach. This means you’ll feel fuller when eating smaller amounts of food. The stomach also empties more slowly, which makes you less hungry.
Surgeons reduce the size of your stomach by up to 85% during sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve surgery. After surgery, you will need to eat smaller amounts of food. You’ll also feel less hungry.

Robotic Bariatric Surgery

Robotic bariatric surgery is a type of minimally invasive weight loss surgery. During robotic bariatric surgery, your surgeon will sit at a console and use robotic arms to control a camera. This allows your bariatric surgeon to gain a better view of the surgical site. The operative tools attached to the mechanical arms give the surgeon an increased range of motion.
