Program Overview | Psychiatry Residency Program | Hackensack University Medical Center

Program Overview

Since receiving ACGME accreditation, our program proudly welcomed its first class in July 2025, continuing the rich tradition of graduate medical education at Hackensack University Medical Center. Prior to starting our free-standing program, we were a track of the Jersey Shore Residency Program and we continue to maintain a strong collaborative relationship with our outstanding colleagues at both Jersey Shore University Medical Center and Ocean University Medical Center. Collectively, we are dedicated to training psychiatrists who excel in delivering empathic, evidence-based, patient-centered care. Our program is designed to nurture residents' individual interests, equipping them for various career paths in numerous psychiatric specialties, including child and adolescent, addiction, geriatric, forensic, research, academic, private practice or community psychiatry.

Our residency program offers a comprehensive clinical experience in a university hospital environment. This setting ensures tailored faculty supervision and mentorship. Our trainees will have a broad palate of experiences upon which to draw. Our academic strengths include an outstanding grand rounds program, dynamic clinical research projects, dedicated teaching faculty, and a commitment to physician wellness. Program highlights feature cutting-edge pediatric consultation experiences at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital, and an enriching psychotherapy program. Additionally, our residents benefit from our strong affiliations, particularly with the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, the East Orange Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMCE), and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

Outstanding opportunities exist for our residents to present at local and national conferences, publish in respected academic journals, and teach medical students. Our dynamic program is grounded in clinical experience and didactics, with an integrative care mission that will prepare trainees to demonstrate the knowledge, clinical skills and empathy that is requisite to becoming a leader in psychiatry. Our goal is for these experiences to lead to a well-rounded and rewarding career in psychiatry.

Our faculty is committed to providing the best educational opportunities for all learners in our institution. Our physicians have trained at world-class institutions, in every medical and surgical specialty. Residents receive supervision from our faculty who serve as attending psychiatrists at HUMC and faculty members of the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine and have opportunities to collaborate with them in clinical research. Our didactic curriculum covers all psychiatric disorders and the major treatment modalities. The program is offered in a progressive, collegial atmosphere while embracing new challenges to our field. Our graduates will be capable of practicing independently whether they choose to enter a fellowship, private practice or or pursue an academic career.
