Psychiatry Residency | Hackensack University Medical Center

Welcome Message from the Program Director

Welcome and thank you for your interest in our Psychiatry Residency Program at Hackensack Meridian Health - Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) and East Orange Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Our four-year ACGME-accredited program is conveniently located in northern New Jersey, just 15 minutes from New York City. HUMC is the tertiary care flagship hospital of the 18-hospital Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) network that spans the entire state. In 2025, U.S. News & World Report ranked HUMC among the Top 20 hospitals in the nation and shared a four-way tie (with Columbia, NYU, and Mount Sinai) as #1 in the New Jersey/New York metro area. Clinical rotations at the East Orange Veterans Affairs Medical Center enrich our trainees’ experience in learning about diverse patient populations and operations of different health systems.

Our residency program offers multiple learning opportunities. Hackensack University Medical Center is the home of Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital, the # 1 children’s hospital in the state, and #1 ranked hospital for Pediatric & Adolescent Behavioral Health in New Jersey. HUMC has the busiest Emergency Department in New Jersey and is the sixth busiest across the entire country.

If you are interested in working with psychiatry attendings and psychiatry residents who are completely devoted to your development. I encourage you to apply to our program.

Mission Statement

Our psychiatry residency program emphasizes a balanced approach to psychiatric education. Residents engage with a curriculum that integrates the ACGME’s six core competencies: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice. This comprehensive framework ensures that our residents emerge as skilled and compassionate doctors.
