Pediatric Pulmonology Care
Helping Kids in New Jersey Breathe Easier
The pediatric pulmonology team at Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health provides comprehensive care for children with short-term and ongoing conditions of the lungs. Our specialists look beyond the diagnosis to understand how respiratory issues can affect a child's daily life, from sleep to school to play.
Serving families across New Jersey, we’re here to help your child breathe easier and live better, with services available at our leading children’s hospitals across the state.
Conditions We Treat
We provide inpatient and outpatient care for a wide range of pulmonary and respiratory conditions, including:
- Asthma
- Bronchiectasis
- Chronic lung disease (including prematurity-related)
- Primary ciliary dyskinesia
- Cystic fibrosis
- Interstitial lung disease
- Persistent cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, exercise intolerance
- Recurrent pneumonia
- Oxygen and respiratory technology dependence
- Sleep-related breathing disorders
The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital has achieved Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification in Pediatric Asthma Care. The Joint Commission certification is awarded to clinical programs that emphasize a consistent approach to patient care and a culture of excellence.
Advanced Diagnostic Tools: Flexible Bronchoscopy
When a more detailed view of your child’s airways is needed, we may perform a flexible bronchoscopy, a minimally invasive procedure that helps us diagnose and treat airway problems. This test gives us a closer look inside your child’s lungs to better understand the cause of their symptoms.
Flexible bronchoscopy may be used for:
- Investigating abnormal chest X-rays
- Identifying airway obstruction or narrowing
- Collecting samples via bronchoalveolar lavage
- Diagnosing infections, inflammation, or bleeding
- Performing brush biopsies for further analysis
Asthma Support at Home: The COACH Program
For families in Monmouth and Ocean counties, our COACH (Community Outreach for Asthma Care and Health) team offers in-home support for children insured through NJ FamilyCare/Medicaid or Charity Care.
Through the COACH Program:
- A specially trained Community Health Worker visits your home
- We assess your child’s environment for common asthma triggers
- We help create a plan alongside your child’s pediatrician and pulmonologist
- You’ll receive education and tools to better manage asthma symptoms
Research shows that reducing asthma triggers at home can improve symptom-free days and reduce the need for medication. Our goal is to improve your child’s quality of life, while supporting your entire family in the process.
