It is primarily an outpatient based training program of one year duration with a system-based, evidence-based approach to patient care. It is accredited by the ACGME and leads to eligibility for the sleep medicine board certification exam administered by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). Fellows benefit from our multidisciplinary sleep clinic with pulmonary and neurology sleep faculty to develop confidence and comfort level in the diagnosis and treatment of all various types of sleep disorders, including telehealth encounters. We have a state-of-the-art AASM accredited sleep lab with 6-beds enabling the fellows to gain expertise in the interpretation of various types of sleep studies, including special montages, actigraphy and home sleep tests. This is backed by a strong didactic curriculum to understand the physiology of sleep, pathophysiology of sleep disorders and sleep pharmacology with our established record of a high board pass rate.
HMH-JFK Medical Center is an interesting and stimulating learning environment with several GME programs onsite where there are opportunities to mentor rotating medical students and residents as well as engage in research and scholarly activity supported by resources like the Red cap coordinator and biostatisticians resulting in several research publications. Fellows gain exposure to all aspects of functioning of a sleep center and our graduates have successfully established careers as clinical practitioners or academicians or entrepreneurs, based on their personal professional goals. The fellowship upholds work life balance and social networking with house staff from the other on-site GME programs.
