Breast Imaging Services

Mammography typically is the first step for screening. We offer high-resolution 3D mammography supported by AI software at all locations to provide the most advanced technologies available for early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. Utilizing the most inclusive model to assess a woman’s risk for breast cancer, we now offer a breast cancer risk assessment as part of your visit. This personalized risk assessment identifies women who are at high risk for breast cancer or an inherited predisposition for breast and ovarian cancer, who may benefit from additional imaging, such as breast MRI, and those who may benefit from genetic counseling.
An advanced imaging technology that combines the benefits of high-resolution 3D mammography with functional imaging using a contrast agent. This form of mammography provides information about any abnormal blood blood and vessels, which helps to improve breast cancer detection, as an alternative to MRI.
If a suspicious area is detected during a mammogram, or the initial results are not certain, we may recommend a high-resolution ultrasound to provide additional information.
MRI is a highly sensitive and advanced imaging modality that combines unique soft tissue detail with contrast. It may be used to screen high risk women, those with inherited genetic mutations predisposing to breast cancer and those with a personal history of breast diagnosed at or younger than age 50 and/or with dense breast tissue.

Who Needs a Mammography?

Mammograms are the most effective screening tool for detecting breast cancer early—often before symptoms appear. Knowing when to start and how often to get screened depends on your age, risk factors, and personal health history. If you’re unsure when to start or how often to schedule your mammogram, our care team is here to help you make a plan that’s right for you.

Women ages 40 and above: Should start annual screening mammography and continue if healthy and with a life expectancy of 10 years.
  • Have a family history of breast cancer
  • Have dense breast tissue
  • Carry a BRCA1 or BRCA2 (or any of the additional known 9 gene mutations)
  • Had prior chest radiation at a young age (most often due to Hodgkin's Disease)
  • Have a personal history of breast cancer or other high-risk conditions

If you feel a lump, experience nipple discharge, notice changes in breast shape or skin texture, or have pain that doesn’t go away, talk to your doctor right away, even if you’re not due for a routine mammogram.

What to Expect

Knowing what to expect can help ease anxiety and ensure you feel confident going into your appointment. Whether it’s your first time or a routine annual screening, our goal is to make the experience as smooth and comfortable as possible.

  • Wear a two-piece outfit so you only need to remove your top.
  • Avoid using deodorant, powders, or lotions on your chest or underarms, as they may affect the imaging results.
  • Bring your ID and insurance card.
If you’ve had prior mammograms at another facility, bring a CD of your prior images and reports or let us before your appointment, so we may request them and have them available on the day of your appointment.
  • A licensed, experienced technologist will guide you through the process and answer any questions.
  • You’ll stand in front of the mammography machine while each breast is gently compressed for a few seconds to capture clear, high-resolution images.
  • The entire exam usually takes about 15 minutes.
  • You can return to your normal activities immediately.
  • A board-certified radiologist will review your images and your results will be shared with you and your physician, typically within a few days.
  • If additional imaging is needed, we’ll contact you to schedule follow-up tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

For women at average risk, a mammogram every year is generally recommended starting at age 40. If you have a higher risk due to family history or genetic factors, your doctor may suggest starting earlier, screening more often or additional screening, such as ultrasound or MRI.
Most women should begin considering regular mammogram screenings at the age of 40,  depending on your personal risk factors and family history. The best approach is to talk with your provider about your individual risk and when it makes sense to begin. A breast cancer risk assessment should be performed by your doctor by the age of 25.
No referral is needed for a routine screening mammogram. However, some insurance providers may require one for payment. If you're getting a diagnostic mammogram (used to evaluate symptoms like a lump or pain), you will need a script. It's a good idea to check with your provider or call ahead to confirm.
During a mammogram, each breast is placed on a flat surface and gently compressed with a paddle. Compression helps spread out the breast tissue so the machine can take clear X-ray images. The process usually takes about 15 minutes and may cause brief discomfort, but it’s over quickly.
Yes, most insurance plans and Medicare cover screening mammograms at no cost, usually once every 12 months for women over 40. Diagnostic mammograms may involve a copay or deductible, depending on your plan. Always verify coverage with your insurance provider before your appointment.
You’ll typically receive screening results within a few days to a week. Diagnostic mammogram results may be available more quickly, especially if you’re having follow-up imaging.
