What Is Dialysis?

Dialysis is a treatment that takes over the function of your kidneys when they are no longer able to remove waste and excess fluid from your body. This therapy filters your blood, balances electrolytes, and restores your body’s metabolism—helping you feel better and stay healthy.

Types of Dialysis We Offer

Hackensack Meridian Health offers the most advanced dialysis to treat people with little to no kidney function. Through a combination of skilled staff and state-of-the-art dialysis machines, our goal is to provide advanced treatment so you can live your life to its fullest. We offer:

  • Dialysis/hemodialysis. Traditional dialysis is called “hemodialysis” because a machine filters waste and fluid from your blood.
  • Peritoneal dialysis. A cleaning solution is delivered to the lining of your abdomen (peritoneum) to filter waste products from your blood.
  • Prolonged intermittent renal replacement therapy (PIRRT). Noncontinuous treatment over a period of time, such as every other day.
  • Sustained low-efficiency daily dialysis (SLEDD). Hemodialysis delivered to critically ill patients.

Home Dialysis

You may be eligible for home dialysis using a portable dialysis system. This allows you to undergo more frequent hemodialysis therapy in the comfort of your home or even when traveling.

More frequent hemodialysis has been shown to provide substantial clinical benefits. By increasing the frequency and reducing the duration of the dialysis session, the process more closely resembles the normal working of the kidney. In addition, it allows greater independence and flexibility in managing kidney disease.

Vascular Access for Dialysis

If you are undergoing dialysis, our interventional radiologists will insert a flexible plastic tube called a catheter into one of your blood vessels. The catheter will remain in your blood vessel for an extended period, providing your care team with access to your bloodstream so you can receive treatment.

Our transonic testing system regularly screens your vascular access during dialysis treatment to ensure optimal blood flow. If issues are identified, we can act quickly to allow you to maintain your dialysis schedule.
