Air Medical Program in New Jersey

On April 7, 2012, AirMed One took its first service flight within an hour-and-a-half of its official beginning. The program took off and has grown over the years, adding a second helicopter, AirMed Two, on May 22, 2019. Our Air Medical Program provides emergent air medical lifesaving transportation 24/7, 365 days a year for the state of New Jersey and the southern part of New York state. The program operates under the FAA Part 135 Certificate held and operated by our partner Air Methods.

In critical situations like motor vehicle crashes, pedestrians being struck, strokes, burns, and boating or swimming accidents – where minutes can make a difference – our air medical team is there to care for our patients.

The team consists of flight nurses, flight paramedics, pilots, and dedicated mechanics. The team is led by Chief Fight Nurse, Joe Solda and flight followed by our Mobile Intensive Care Communications (MICCOM) team, led by Communications Manager, Chris Hogan.

Our helicopters and flight teams are stationed at the Greenwood Lake Airport and the Ocean County Airport. The crew is always ready to provide inter-facility transfers as well as respond to 911 requests for emergencies. They partner with area police and fire departments as well as with our health care network’s extraordinary emergency medical services team members on the ground.

In the 10 years since the program’s inception, the flight team has completed 3,326 patient care flights. In 2021, they answered 609 calls safely transporting each of those patients.

Celebrating our Milestones

As the team celebrates 4 years in the air, they're also celebrating 1,000 complete flights. That's 1,000 patients who needed to be moved from the scene of an injury or between facilities and whose transportation required a helicopter. This team is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems. CAMTS accreditation recognizes Hackensack University Medical Center’s air medical program for its excellence in providing helicopter EMS services.AirMed One and Two
