Advancing Cardiac Surgery Without Borders: Dr. Mark Anderson’s Mission to Egypt

January 20, 2026
For more than two decades, Mark Anderson, M.D., chair of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center, has exemplified what it means to lead with purpose, skill and compassion. This year marked a significant milestone: Dr. Anderson’s 25th mission trip to Egypt — an extraordinary testament to his unwavering commitment to advancing cardiac surgery and expanding access to life-saving care worldwide.
During the course of these missions, Dr. Anderson has personally evaluated more than 1,000 patients in clinic and performed more than 300 cardiac surgeries, many on individuals who otherwise would not have had access to specialized surgical care. What began as a focused effort to introduce minimally invasive cardiac surgery has evolved into a comprehensive, collaborative global health initiative.
Dr. Anderson’s expertise in minimally invasive techniques has been a cornerstone of the mission. Beyond performing complex procedures, he has dedicated himself to teaching these advanced skills to numerous cardiac surgery fellows, empowering the next generation of surgeons with techniques that improve outcomes, reduce recovery times, and elevate standards of care.
Equally impactful is the multidisciplinary approach Dr. Anderson brings to Egypt. Each mission includes a highly skilled team focused on education and best practices across the entire operating room environment. From anesthesia protocols and surgical first assisting to operating room nursing, the team works side by side with local clinicians to share knowledge, refine techniques, and strengthen systems of care.
“What began as interest in minimally invasive surgery has expanded to a mission whose goals extend far beyond,” says Dr. Anderson. “We have become a family united by a shared mission: to advance cardiac surgery worldwide and deliver life-saving care to patients who might otherwise never have access to it.”
This year’s visit also reflects Dr. Anderson’s forward-looking vision. He was joined by Yuriy Dudiy, M.D., director of the Adult ECMO Program in the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Daniel Denis, D.O., Department of Anesthesia, and Michael Wilderman, M.D., chief of Endovascular Surgery and co-director of the Aortic Center at Hackensack University Medical Center. Drs. Dudiy, Denis and Wilderman’s participation underscores the program’s growth and its emphasis on advanced cardiac and circulatory support, further strengthening the collaboration between Hackensack and its international partners.
“I am creating a succession plan to continue this fruitful relationship,” Dr. Anderson explained, emphasizing the importance of sustainability, mentorship and long-term impact.
Dr. Anderson’s mission to Egypt is more than a series of trips — it is a living example of Hackensack University Medical Center’s commitment to global leadership, education and compassionate care. By building lasting relationships, sharing advanced expertise and inspiring future leaders, Dr. Anderson and his team are helping shape the future of cardiac surgery — one patient, one surgeon, and one mission at a time.
