A Team-Based Approach to ILD Care

At Hackensack University Medical Center, our ILD program bring together a team of lung specialists and care professionals to create your treatment plan. Our team includes:
- ILD and pulmonary hypertension specialists
- Nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers and care coordinators
- Rheumatologists, gastroenterologists, dermatologists and infectious disease physicians
- Thoracic surgeons and interventional pulmonologists
Every case is reviewed by our team in a multidisciplinary conference, so you benefit from the shared knowledge of many experts, not just one.
Diagnosing ILD
Getting the right diagnosis is key. That’s why we start with an evaluation that includes:
- A full medical history and symptom review
- Blood tests
- Bronchoscopy or robotic-assisted biopsy, if needed
- High-resolution chest CT scan
- Pulmonary function tests
- Six-minute walk test
We will also assess your exposure history (such as smoking or environmental factors) and refer you to specialists as needed.
Personalized Treatment for ILD
There’s no one-size-fits-all treatment for ILD, which is why we customize every plan. Depending on your diagnosis and needs, treatment may include:
- Anti-inflammatory or antifibrotic medications
- Enrollment in clinical trials for access to new therapies
- Immunosuppressants for autoimmune-related ILDs
- Pulmonary rehabilitation to improve breathing and stamina
- Referral to a lung transplant center, if appropriate
- Supplemental oxygen therapy
We also work closely with the Center for Discovery and Innovation on research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of lung disease.
